Management of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN)

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy is a group of neuromuscular symptoms characterized by damage to the peripheral nerves as a consequence of treatment with chemotherapeutic drugs.

CIPN affects 20-100% of people undergoing chemotherapy and produces symptoms such as:

  • loss of or changes to sensation in the feet and hands
  • pain
  • numbness, burning or pins and needles
  • temperature hypersensitivity

CIPN may have an impact on your balance and mobility, muscle strength and risk of falls.

Evidence shows specific exercise and management strategies can improve CIPN symptom management, resulting in improved quality of life.
